I totally forgot about these taken almost a month ago at the Old Spot in Salem, MA. I’ve been wanting to develop a series of scenes in cafes & restaurants sort of in the spirit of Toulouse Lautrec meets Henri Cartier Bresson as I’m interested in unobtrusively photographing how people interact and express themselves in these areas looking for quiet moments & movement; compositions that speak to the vibe, the energy, the essence. On this particular evening at the Old Spot, I was looking at the photograph of the Beetles on the wall and noticed a woman who was seated in front of it eating chicken wings. She kept wiping her forehead with a napkin and if you didn’t know that, you’d think she sad. What makes this work in every way for me is her position just below the photograph with the clock above it and the barrier below. The others have merit in composition, mood and movement and serve as a first sketch for what’s to come – but that first one is magic.

The Forest Blessing is from the Witches of Salem series which explores the archetype of the wild woman, the instinctual, inner knowing Self; the crone aspect of the Goddess of feminine principle possessing the wisdom and destructive power necessary for rebirth and regeneration with photographs presenting various aspects of a modern witch in ritual. The first series “Forest Witch” documents a Full Moon ritual to bless, protect and heal the Forest of Salem, MA by astrologer,  dancer & dance teacher & Priestess of the Goddess Aepril Schaille  intentionally captured with a soft focus lens to add an otherworldly sensation and to call attention to the unseen movement of energy. It was an honor to capture this ritual on a powerful full moon day to honor, love, clear and thank.  It was also a day of wind – an appropriate affirmation of the clearing aspects – & of Gwyddion – Aepril’s Blue Heeler ….who participated in his own way.  The images feel like the day – otherworldly & powerful; it was a true honor to document the experience.

So this is what it looked like LAST year while today…it’s sunny, mild and definitely snowless. Trying to feel a little festive in this climate is different. No complaints…especially when one can look at images of years past.
