The Beginning

This is a very different beginning of summer - a start that in prior years held a certain kind of promise, the freedom of long hazy days, heat, thunderstorms, crashing waves, warm sand. And while someday those aspects may surface, this year feels like deep water and I’m way out of my depth in knowing how to navigate. It’s a lot of heaviness yet to shed let alone share. What I can do is turn to days past. This one here with a lineup of the kids holds that promise of everything and nothing at the same time. I remember the second it surfaced and thankful to have had my camera with me. It looks so still as if it were posed. The waves, the spray and the long span of sand say everything about late June - many days left on the horizon.
