One of the best parts in working with others is remaining connected and after documenting their wedding years ago, I was happy to accept the opportunity to document yet another milestone - that of Michael's 40th birthday. Planned by Claudia as a surprise that included parents and family from across the country and surrounded by local friends, it landed with complete disbelief and a warm embrace.
Held in an exquisite home of a talented artist who's beautiful work graced the walls alongside inspirational elements that were simply fascinating. As a bonus, we were all able to see the Claudia's design for an extension of the kitchen onto a back yard deck. But the true highlight of it all outside of seeing his parents and family, were the expressions and embraces, the connection of family and friends, and the memory of this beautiful afternoon.

The path to this week-long story of photographs started the year before in creating a lifestyle website for Michelle and an ensuing need for photographs - in particular, portraits of her surfing. And as she'd learned how to surf in on the seacoast of New Hampshire, she decided to travel to New England. One year later, and a need for new photographs, a refreshed website and a new food and wisdom website which she was launching the following year, Michelle decided it was time for me to travel to her home in Albuquerque for a week-long documentary featuring all the elements of her life - her dogs, entertaining, food, writing, cooking, restaurants, grocery shopping, her faith and her love of sports - golf, tennis and swimming. Additionally, we wove in a fair number of portraits and stock images of her home and surroundings. While I've opted to pull just a few of the many presented, I can only say I hope this opportunity presents itself again. Traveling to a new area, being inspired by different surroundings ... and for me, working primarily in color - it's a project I'd take again in a heartbeat.

I don't think there's anything on this planet that more trumpets life that the sunflower. For me that's because of the reason behind its name.
I don't think there's anything on this planet that more trumpets life that the sunflower. For me that's because of the reason behind its name. Not because it looks like the sun but because it follows the sun. During the course of the day, the head tracks the journey of the sun across the sky. A satellite dish for sunshine. Wherever light is, no matter how weak, these flowers will find it. And that's such an admirable thing. And such a lesson in life.

and indeed they do and they did! despite the different personalities and meanderings - one liking to be held, one preferring to be free - they are bound together into one beautiful little bundle that moves and meanders like a happy whistling stream in the summer. fascinating and fast moving session for this family of four (+golden retriever) whom i'd met years ago at a wedding (the then best man). so it was a welcome reunion of sorts of a different kind. double the everything!
in learning a little about the day-to-day goings and comings, l learned that sunday mornings are family time on the bed - just connecting, laughing and being together - and tho tricky to obtain with two fast moving faces and a dog who was otherwise engaged, it made for a lovely portrait. in addition, we integrated a little bit of what life looks and feels like right now ... on the floor, in the high chairs, and a little outside thanks to a warmish sunday morning and honing in on the peeking, the crawling, the laughing and the movement (two girls at one year old in full exploration) ... in a word - wonderment.
lifestyle photographs in color
last year at this time i spent a week in Albuquerque photographing lifestyle images for a client's website with a shot list that spanned sports (tennis/golf), entertaining, cooking, food shopping, manicures, restaurants, church, four doggies, writing, home vignettes and portraits. it was an experience that brought me into the world of another and i feel helped me create a strong portfolio of photographs that reflect her personality and spirit.
the website is inspirebymichelle.com and was created by fladdap, inc. the company i'm part of with my husband.
as photographs can tell the story in ways no words or graphic illustrations can, custom photography for professionals, lifestyle writers, fitness and healthy living coaches, hair stylists, makeup artists and others who's service can be told with a story of photographs has become a growing part of our web design business.
lifestyle session in boston
I recently spent a day with a client and good friend who'd brought me to her home in Albuquerque last summer for a week long lifestyle/documentary session, as she was in Boston with her new man - the very one she was introduced to right after I'd left last summer.
We planned a day that took us from the waterfront near the Aquarium, the North End, the water feature at Rose Kennedy Greenway, the Esplanade, Boston Common & Quincy Market,

I mention this as lifestyle because it was documenting her time here (as if she lived here) with a specific set of images in mind as the photographs will be used in two new websites we are creating for her, and as you'll see, most of them are in color. Though our time and path was more than i'd normally suggest for most sessions, we made the most of each area we were in. and the pictures tell the story - actually they tell a few stories....and that's all i'm saying.
